We felt we would be remiss if we didn’t highlight a special item in our collection this Holiday.
That special offering is the Black & White Herringbone Authentic Harris Tweed Pure Wool Sport Coat. We’re thrilled to be able to offer this unique sport coat this season at such a fantastic value. Some of you may not know the significance of Harris Tweed, so here’s a little background:
Harris Tweed comes from the Outer Hebrides of Scotland and is made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun by islanders. It was in the mid-nineteenth century that the cloth, once produced only for home use or for local markets, began to be promoted and sold across the country by its virtue as a fashionable hunting and sporting garment fabric. It soon became a favorite of the aristocracy, and was even worn by those in Queen Victoria’s inner circle.
Harris Tweed was trademarked in 1910 and the Harris Tweed Association was formed, to be replaced in 1993 by the Harris Tweed Authority. An Act of Parliament strictly regulates this fabric in that it “must be made from pure virgin wool which has been dyed and spun on the islands and handwoven at the home of the weaver in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.”
As you can imagine, this very fine cloth so steeped in tradition is in high demand around the world. Due to the stringent handling of supply by its representatives and the time-intensive process of home manufacture, Harris Tweed clothing can be difficult to come by. This season, though, we’ve had the good fortune to acquire a limited quantity of Harris Tweed sport coats. Whether you purchase it for yourself or as a gift for someone else, Harris Tweed is a truly special item to have in your wardrobe.
